Advanced Surface Ablation
ASA, or Advanced Surface Ablation is a laser vision correction procedure designed to treat vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. ASA is a more advanced form of PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy.
ASA patients are treated with the same advanced technology as iLASIK patientsexcept no corneal flap is created at the beginning of the procedure. Instead, a well is placed on the cornea and filled with a diluted alcohol solution.
The outer layers of corneal skin cells are moved aside to expose the secondary layer of cells. This secondary layer is then reshaped and once treatment is completed, the outer cells are smoothed back into position to act as a biological bandage. Additional protection is added with a temporary bandage soft contact lens for the patient to wear for a few days during the healing process.
ASA is may be a good option for patients not eligible for the standard LASIK procedure. It provides comparable results, although the overall recovery time is longer. Contact the office for a consultation to see if Advanced Surface Ablation is the right choice for you.
