Meiboflo
Meiboflo
Meiboflow is a medical device that is used to perform a procedure called meibomian gland expression. It is designed specifically for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a common cause of evaporative dry eye.
The meibomian glands are located in the eyelids and produce the oily component of tears called meibum. In MGD, these glands can become blocked or dysfunctional, leading to inadequate oil secretion and unstable tear film. This can result in dryness, irritation, and other symptoms associated with dry eye.
Meiboflow utilizes a combination of heat therapy and gentle massage to express and clear the blockages in the meibomian glands. Here's how the procedure generally works:
- Preparation: The patient is typically positioned comfortably
- Heat application: The Meiboflow device applies controlled heat to the inner eyelids. The purpose of the heat is to soften the hardened meibum and improve the flow of oil.
- Gentle massage: After the heat application, the device employs gentle mechanical pressure to massage the eyelids. This helps to further express the meibomian glands and clear any blockages.
- Expression of meibum: As the massage is performed, the meibum is expressed or released from the meibomian glands onto the ocular surface. This helps to improve the quality of the tear film and enhance lubrication.
The entire procedure is usually completed in 15 minutes.
